5 Ways You Can Help Protect the Planet

This April, Aveda once again celebrates Earth Month with fashion shows featuring recycled materials, water-conservation campaigns and cuts for clean water events that help beautify you and the earth.

We’re thrilled to be selling our limited edition Light the Way candle with 100% of the $19 suggested retail price going to WaterAid Australia, a non-profit organisation that channels high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve environmental problems all around the world. Since 2007, we’ve raised over $13 million through the sales of this special candle for clean water!

Sold only once a year during April, the Light the Way™ Candle is a reminder that we can all take actions—big and small—to help conserve water.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

1. Consider a candle: While lighting a candle may seem like a simple gesture, it can change lives. During Earth Month, Aveda donates 100% of the purchase price ($19 suggested retail price) of our signature limited-edition Light the Way™ Candles to WaterAid Australia, a non-profit organisation that directs high-impact grants to grassroots groups working to solve environmental problems around the world. The candle is housed in 100% reclaimed glass beverage bottles and the outer cartons are fabricated from 90% post-consumer recycled paperboard. Each candle is made from 100% naturally-derived soy and plant waxes, so it burns cleanly and completely, for over 27 hours, infusing the air the rich and spicy scent of organic vanilla, cinnamon, and ylang ylang from Madagascar.

2. Get your hair cut: Every year during Earth Month, thousands of awesome Aveda stylists donate their time and talent for Appointments Clean Water.

3. Skip a shampoo: Conserve water (and time in the morning) by ditching the wash step and reaching instead for our Shampure™ Dry Shampoo and Thermal Dry Conditioner.

Curious about the direct impact of the candles? Aveda sources essential oils from Madagascar, which is a country where access to clean drinking water is a daily struggle for many people. But thanks to sales of the candles, Aveda and Global Greengrants Fund have been able to fund projects to bring clean drinking water to villages in Madagascar. “Aveda plans to continue our support for communities in Madagascar thanks to the support of guests in purchasing Light the Way™ Candles,” says Dave Rapaport, Aveda Vice President, Earth and Community Care. The future is, indeed, looking brighter.
