Rosemary oil is deeply nourishing for great hair and skin, with an iconic aroma to wake up your senses. In this article, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of rosemary oil for hair growth and discuss how Aveda uses this powerful ingredient in their haircare and skincare products.
What is rosemary oil?
Rosemary oil is a naturally derived leaf extract of the rosemary plant Rosmarinus officinalis from the rosemary evergreen shrub. Native to the Mediterranean region, it has been used for centuries for its beloved and numerous qualities.
Aveda uses rosemary oil because of its far-reaching effects for mind, hair and body but also to prevent oxidation and keep other oils in our product formulations fresh. Akin to peppermint oil, rosemary oil can help boost hair, scalp and skin health (and mood) as it invigorates and nourishes. That’s why we’ve combined rosemary and peppermint oil in our Rosemary Mint collection.
Rosemary essential oil and hair
Rosemary oil is thought to be a safe and effective remedy for hair loss and may support hair growth. Many choose to use rosemary oil as an easy over-the-counter hair loss treatment, or opt to use haircare products that contain rosemary oil in conjunction with other essential oils like peppermint.
Does rosemary oil help hair growth?
Rosemary promotes the stimulation of hair growth and can help improve scalp health. It contains compounds that can increase blood circulation to the scalp, to ensure hair follicles get the nutrients they need to grow the hair, and prevent them from dying off. Used in conjunction with peppermint oil which is also known to promote hair growth, rosemary oil strengthens scalp circulation and improves nerve growth, which helps stimulate and achieve hair growth.
Rosemary oil may also help prevent hair loss by strengthening hair follicles and reducing inflammation in the scalp. Rosemary oil is also known to improve scalp health, prevent dandruff and reduce scalp irritation, which can contribute to hair loss.
Rosemary mint for mind and body
Used in aromatherapy, rosemary oil can be used to calm, invigorate and improve your overall mood. Rosemary oil can also decrease the level of cortisol in the body, a major stress hormone.
According to our Pure-Fumer, Guy Vincent, rosemary and peppermint are proven to waken your senses. “The smell transmission from your nose to your brain has a profound effect,” he explains. Individually, both rosemary and peppermint work to wake you up but they’re better together. “When they’re expertly blended, their effect is amplified,” Guy says.
Research also suggests that rosemary oil may improve cognitive function, as it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical important for thinking, concentration and memory. Based on a study conducted by Aveda, our Rosemary Mint aroma was proven to help energise, sharpen focus, promote concentration and clear the mind.
