‘90S GRUNGE-GLAM WAVES

AND SMOKY EYES

AT YAJUN

GET READY TO PARTY ALL SEASON

Nineties hairstyles and makeup looks have had a major comeback over the past year, and their impact was definitely felt at YAJUN’s F/W 2018 show at New York Fashion Week. Lead Aveda artists Jon Reyman and Janell Geason, Global Artistic Director for Makeup, channeled the era’s iconic grunge, into an edgy yet wearable look featuring matte waves and smoky eyes.

“It’s kind of a grungy smoky eye,” Janell explained. “We don’t want it to look too pretty.” She freshened up models’ skin, then subtly contoured cheeks with Peach Lights or Uruku bronzer depending on models’ skin tone. A blend of matte shadows was applied to the lids, and dusted under the lash line to define, almost like they slept in their party makeup. For the lip, Janell and team lined with Aveda’s new Feed My Lips liner in Loomi and applied Honey Ginger lipstick, then added Golden Jasper gloss on top.

For hair, Jon and team prepped hair with Phomollient, Volumizing Tonic, and Thickening Tonic to give it a lived-in feel and a bit of volume. Subtle bends and waves were created with a flat iron and by twisting sections when drying. He pulled up the top section of hair near the crown and pinned small pieces to subtly pump up hair near the face.

“It’s got a pulled-back, 1995 kind of vibe,” said Jon. “A little matte and finished without being overdone — it’s actually a continuation of last season.”

We don’t know about you, but this look makes us feel like staying out all night long on the dance floor.
